| April 2, 2008 - Our thoughts exactly Dave. When news of Vince McMahon's lawsuit and purchase of Wrestlinggonewrong.com hit the web, wrestling fans across the internet were hit with mixed reactions. Already notorious for removing their content off YouTube (among other sites), WWE was seemingly trying to stop video-column website wrestlinggonewrong.com from posting their copyrighted footage as well. Literally, within minutes of wrestlinggonewrong.com appearing under a WWE banner, the story was featured on Wrestling-Radio.com & Pro Wrestling Blog. The news article was passed along on Digg, and wrestling fans turned to Yahoo Answers (2) for, well, answers. Eventually it made its way up to the 411mania.com desktop, though they deleted it minutes afterward. But we have proof.
Even WrestlingObserver.com Editor Dave Meltzer reported the story in his latest column at The Wrestling Observer, but then deleted it. But that's cool, we have witnesses at the 411mania forum and WrestleCrap forum. But many of these fans and reporters missed one important detail until it was posted a few threads down: the story was published on April 1st, a.k.a. April Fool's Day. Wrestling Gone Wrong had morphed itself into a cloned copy of WWE.com and posted a satire news article stating that Vince McMahon had sued and now owned all rights and properties of Wrestling Gone Wrong. He was also planning to steal the idea and create SportsEntertainmentGoneWrong.com!
Their were, however, several hints and easter eggs in both the main page and article that hinted of the story being a hoax. Still, the story spread like wildfire to the point of us receiving hate mail from fans because we "sold out." One fan even asked us to "suck his balls" for selling out to the monopoly of McMahon. Some fans expressed sadness at the thought of wrestlinggonewrong.com being shut down. Many others rejoiced at the idea of Vince McMahon having a Wrestling Gone Wrong show on 24/7. You reading this Vince? They want it. To all of the people out there who reminded everyone it was April Fool's Day, shame on you! To all our fans who spread this article for us, to Ben at Wrestling-Radio.com, to the Pro Wrestling Blog, those fans seeking answers on Yahoo, to the 411mania writers and forum board members, to Dave Meltzer & The Wrestling Observer, Wrestlecrap forum members, everyone who gets our sense of humor, we say... Aprils Fools! |
